No Time for Mini-games

Remy rests her sleepy head on Ed’s shoulder as they huddle together for warmth. There wasn’t a chance to pack for the high altitude winds after all. His sight is set on the blinding sun rising over the eastern horizon, flecking pink and red across the boundless sky. He hopes the vista will ease his worries. They barely escaped Runegard last time, and now they’re flying right into a city full of soldiers.

“So what’s the story with those two?” Regis the Good asks Valentine, who leans against the rails on the other side of the deck.

The detective shrugs. “I just got here.”

Regis nods as Valentine rifles through his pockets and pulls out his last cigarette.

“Say, you wouldn’t have a light, would you?” he asks.

The swordsman shakes his head and Valentine shoves the cigarette back in his coat with a sigh.

Remy awakens slowly. Prising her heavy eyelids open she sits up and cracks her neck as she stands. “So what’s our game plan?”

“First things first, we get off this ship before it docks,” Regis insists.

“Can’t we just break everyone out now?” Remy asks.

“Not a chance. Even with my blade, Ozrune’s magic and her…” Regis looks to Avarice who is attentively picking her teeth with a dagger, “… well, whatever she brings, we’re still outnumbered by a few hundred men. Better to play this quiet and enter the city on the sly. They went to a lot of trouble to capture everyone alive, I think it’s safe to say they don’t plan on executing them, at least not right away. We’ll have time to do this smart. It might be a trap after all to nab the rest of you. We’ve an acquaintance in the city who harbours a grudge against Runegard.”

“You think she can be trusted?” Ozrune asks him.

“Maybe, provided our goals align,” Regis says.

“Who is it?” Ed asks.

“Better you just meet her. She’s a cutthroat who values discretion, if you get my meaning,” the swordsman replies.

Remy leans over the railing and sizes up the drop as the gunship soars over rolling emerald hills. “So how do we get off this thing?”

“We’ll jump as soon as we descend over the Great Lake,” Regis grins.

“Wish I hadn’t asked,” she sighs and looks out at the glimmering city of Parousia as it rears on the horizon.

It’s a beautiful ornate metropolis built over an enormous lake. In its centre, atop a great plateau stands the grand Royal Palace. A breathtaking sight, its spires of ivory and white stone tower hundreds of feet above the crowded city, with limestone streets that wind and weave into a dense nest of houses, arches, shops and taverns stacked in claustrophobic clusters.

“Wow,” Ed gasps. “Looks even better in real life.”

Remy smiles at the irony of Ed’s comment. Her eyes glisten with the shimmering sun which beams off the crystal clear lake below. Parousia was a location in the original game that had always stuck with her, probably because it was packed with side quests and mini-games.

“It used to be something special, now it’s pretty much your standard imperial city,” Regis sighs.
